| Wilshire Advocates Coalition |
Mission StatementTo advocate for and support those elements that makes the Wilshire Corridor and the communities along it a thriving urban area. Those elements include a strong working relationship between local businesses and residents, good pedestrian environments, good schools, and a good transportation system. Our current project is to oppose the MTA's Wilshire BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) The following groups are united in opposition to the Wilshire BRT: Wilshire Center Business Improvement Corp., Wilshire Center Chamber of Commerce, CRA Wilshire Center & Koreatown Community Advisory Committee, Community Redevelopment Agency of L.A., Korean-American Coalition, Country Club Park Neighborhood Association, Beverly-Kingsley Neighborhood Association, Park Mile Association, Wilshire Park Neighborhood Association, Miracle Mile Apartment and Commercial Owners Association, Miracle Mile Chamber of Commerce, Miracle Mile Civic Coalition, and Miracle Mile Residential Association, Bus Riders Union, Southern California Transit Advocates, Building Owners & Managers Association of Greater L.A. (BOMA), Assembly Member Gilbert A. Cedillo, Councilman Nate Holden and Councilman John Ferraro and 10 other Los Angeles City Council members. Hundreds of local individuals have sent cards to the MTA Board members and local representatives expressing their opposition to the Wilshire BRT. The City Council of Los Angeles on May 24, 2000 approved a motion by 11 to 1 "that the Council express its strong opposition to the MTA's plans to establish a Wilshire service along Wilshire Boulevard". An L. A Times Editorial asked on June 9 "Why did the MTA board press ahead on a line (Wilshire BRT) with so many detractors?" To quote L. A. City Council President John Ferraro: "As Councilman of the District, I have worked for well over a decade with the business and community leaders on programs to revitalize the Miracle Mile and to restore the vitality of the historic Wilshire Corridor. This public/private partnership has invested years of work and millions of dollars in the installation of such improvements as landscaped medians, curb parking, and left-turn lanes--improvements which are critical to the economic development and revitalization that continuous in the area, but which would be severely impacted by the Wilshire BRT". Our brief position is that MTA should stop wasting our tax monies and immediately put an end to any further studies of the Wilshire BRT, and focus our energy on making the current Metro Rapid Bus Program along Wilshire Boulevard a success.
