WILSHIRE
CENTER COMMUNITY POSITION ON
Wilshire Center, CA - The 23 ½-acre Ambassador Hotel property, in the heart of Wilshire Center, presents an opportunity to create a unique development. This development could become the anchor of the community, a catalyst for the continuing revitalization effort and serve several needs of the community (school facilities, retail amenities and housing) with a pedestrian orientation toward Wilshire Blvd. On October 23, 2001, the Board of the Los Angeles Unified School District approved an agreement to purchase this property in Wilshire Center. The Wilshire community believes that a mixed-use concept will better integrate the school facility into the business community, protect the students from a high traffic thoroughfare, and function as a catalyst for development, jobs and housing - all of which are as needed and essential to the revitalization of this community as a school. The Wilshire community's support for a school on this site assumes that the LAUSD: 1) designs the project to eliminate any negative impact on the neighboring community; 2) adopts operational policies and procedures to eliminate any negative social impacts that students are capable of creating, such as loitering, trespassing, graffiti, etc.; 3) agrees to involve the community in a substantial and meaningful manner in the design of the facilities and the educational concepts; 4) incorporates a retail/housing component at the Wilshire frontage. (more) Wilshire/LAUSD/Ambassador Page 2 LAUSD School Board President Caprice Young said in July 2000: " As your board member for the area, I intend to involve key local stakeholders in the design process and to work with the district staff to ensure that the resulting high school is a net asset to the community - not a detriment." The Wilshire community advocates the need to build new schools in our densely populated community, which includes some of the most severely overcrowded schools in Los Angeles. Year-round calendars, portable classrooms, and busing of as many students out of the district as there are attending schools in the district, have been a reality for decades. The Wilshire Community includes the following groups; Wilshire Center Business Improvement Corp., Wilshire Center Chamber of Commerce, Korean-American Federation of Los Angeles and the Korean-American Chamber of Commerce.
