Wilshire Center District Team’s Activities and Other News
Last quarter, the District Safety Team assisted the City in getting over 523 bulky items picked up, made 152 calls/reports to the City for street repairs (135 potholes reported and fixed), and assisted in getting 253 graffiti tags cleaned up. The team responded to 28 calls for assists to the LAPD and others. They issued 57 illegal vendor warnings and assisted 21 homeless individuals. 268 illegal signs were removed.
Last quarter, the District Clean Team collected 1540 bags of trash (35,420 lbs), removed 188 graffiti tags on sidewalk pots, poles, and news racks. The crew is out every Monday and Thursday sweeping the sidewalks, picking up trash, clearing gutters and painting out graffiti from street poles and flower planters. The team is now emptying about 40 trash cans throughout the District due to the City’s reduced efforts which had led to an overflowing of the cans. We are exploring the idea of adding wire metal trash cans within area. In July the Team cleaned one of the parkways in the District. This stretch of parkway located on the west side of Hobart Ave. between Wilshire Blvd. and 7th filled a whole flatbed truck with trash bags. One of our contractors trimmed over 35 Palm Trees along Wilshire Blvd. from Wilton to Hoover and a few on Normandie.
The landscape crew for the District’s Wilshire streetscape continues to maintain all 15 medians and about 160 flower pots along Wilshire Blvd. The work consists of removal of trash, trimming of plants, watering of plants, and repairing broken sprinklers. We are adding and replacing some of the plant material this month and over the next few months. We have repaired the median at Manhattan Ave., that was partly run over by a car.
We are working with a landscape company to get costs on repairing the damaged brick paver crosswalks. We started discussions with the City about securing funds to repair the crosswalks. In the month of June the bike patrols located many of the potholes within our area and then, shortly after, the City made the repairs.
WCBIC staff is exploring the idea of working with local community groups, with the assistance of a landscape architect, to design new crosswalks and street furniture along 3rd Street.
Community events: On the evening of June 16th, 2011, over 200 people gathered at the corner of 3rd St. and Vermont Ave. in Los Angeles for a Night Out event. The purpose of this event was for people to get to know their neighbors and to join with our elected officials, community leaders and the LAPD officers of the Olympic Division to empower citizens to regain control of our communities.
