INTERNET BUSINESS CENTER Definition LA Internet
Business Center (LAIBC) is a business incubator that houses small Internet
related start-up firms. LAIBC provides
these firms with affordable office space, equipment, services, and planning assistance. Description LAIBC will
help Internet entrepreneurs start and build their own businesses.
To encourage business start-ups, LAIBC is planning to provide beginning
businesses with all or many of the following advantages: affordable rental space;
shared office services and equipment; management and business help; business counseling
and planning; and a creative entrepreneurial environment. Additionally, LAIBC
will provide a supportive environment that encourages business growth and stability
by helping new firms survive the initial start up stage. LAIBC
is a long term economic development tool for the Wilshire Center Community. Business
incubators help to create jobs, diversify the economy, expand the tax base, reuse
existing buildings, enhance the community's image as a center for innovation and
entrepreneurship, and encourage the development and transfer of new technology.
While
the purpose of LAIBC is to provide a nurturing environment for business start
ups, the goal of LAIBC is to prepare these businesses to locate outside of LAIBC.
To do this, LAIBC plans to help tenants develop business plans and budgets. LAIBC
is to have a graduation policy that requires tenants to move from the incubator
after a certain period of time, generally from one year to three years. The Structure
of LAIBC LAIBC
is to be managed by Wilshire Enhancement Group (WEG).
LAIBC is not maintained for the purpose of making a profit.
The WEG was formed as a non-profit, chapter 501 (c) (3) which allows WEG
to accept charitable donations and be tax deductible. This type of arrangement
allows the incubator to take advantage of both the expertise of the private sector
and the use of public funding. The LAIBC will have the assistance of an Advisory Board consisting of members from groups such as the local government, private industry, private lending, local business development organizations, community organizations, and/or educational institutions. This group is to consists of 6 to 9 people. It is this group that will also be the screening committee for the new perspective clients/tenants. LAIBC has the support
of the Wilshire Center Business Improvement Corp., Wilshire Center Chamber of
Commerce, City of Los Angeles, County, SBA Small Business Information Center and
other government units that are interested in working to see LAIBC be a success
for start up companies. This existing support network provides a measure of the
community's commitment for helping start up businesses. The group of organizations
provides a variety of services and programs for small start up firms within our
community. Facilities are to be available to occupants 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with the same in HVAC services at an additional cost. The central office will provide receptionist services, conference rooms, lunch room, classrooms, faxing and a copier. The central office can provide assistance for Internet services, telephone service/voicemail, email, web hosting, web design, printers/computers and network services. DSL or TI lines can be provided to each suite. The cost of these services could be reduced, charged as needed, or provided at cost to the tenants.
