Wilshire Center-Koreatown Neighborhood Council
October 5, 2004

Wilshire Center-Koreatown Neighborhood Council election slated for Saturday, December 4, 2004

Wilshire Center, Los Angeles, CA – Gary Russell, president of the Interim Board of Directors of the Wilshire Center-Koreatown Neighborhood Council (WCKNC), announced today that the first election to fill the 35 seats of the Board of Directors will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2004.

Candidate Registration
Individuals who live, work, own property or conduct business, or act as designated representatives of a nonprofit community organization within the geographic boundaries of WCKNC may file a registration form to become a candidate. The filing deadline is Tuesday, November 23, 2004, 5:00 p.m.

The election will fill the following open positions:

  • Twelve (12) seats for community residents. The WCKNC neighborhood has been divided into five Districts with two or three seats allocated for each District to ensure representation by those who live in the diverse neighborhoods that are part of WCKNC.
  • Nine (9) seats for businesses, commercial entities and business associations.
  • Nine (9) seats for nonprofit organizations.
  • Two (2) seats for youth. The candidates must be 16 or 17 years old at election time.
  • Three (3) seats for at-large representation.

A map showing the specific boundaries of the neighborhood council and the residential districts is available on the web site.

The candidate registration form is available in English, Spanish or Korean from the web site: www.wilshirecenter.com/wcknc. An election pamphlet, including the candidate registration form, will be distributed throughout Wilshire Center-Koreatown by a door-to-door distribution service in mid October.

Candidate Orientation and Workshops
Anyone who is interested in becoming a Board candidate should visit WCKNC’s web site to read the Bylaws and Election Procedures. Candidates are welcome to attend all future Interim Board meetings. The next meeting of the Wilshire Center-Koreatown Board will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library.

Candidate workshops will be given by the League of Women Voters on these dates: Saturday, October 23, 2004, 11:30 a.m. and Wednesday, November 3, 2004, 6:00 p.m., both at Pio Pico Koreatown Public Library.

Candidates Forum
WCKNC stakeholders are invited to meet the candidates during the Candidates Forum on Saturday, December 4, 2004, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at Great Vision Church, 433 S. Normandie, Los Angeles. Candidate information statements will be available at the Forum, and candidates will be invited to present themselves to voters during a two-minute talk.

Election
Immediately following the Candidates Forum, the balloting will begin at 1:00 p.m. and conclude at 6:00 p.m. at Great Vision Church, 433 S. Normandie, Los Angeles.

Election results will be posted by Wednesday, December 8, 2004, 5:00 p.m.

First Meeting of Elected WCKNC Board
The first meeting of the elected WCKNC Board of Directors will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at Pio Pico-Koreatown Public Library.

The mission of WCKNC is to ensure effective stakeholder participation and interaction in all aspects of the decision-making and problem-solving processes on issues that affect our community.
